We actually have a page-by-page slideshow format -- what's used on Future Frontiers. The format has two display modes: The first is the "single page" mode we ultimately wound up using, but individual "slide pages" are also generated. It's not smooth-and-JavaScript-y like the NYT story, but IMHO it works. See: https://www.yakcollective.org/projects/future-frontiers/01-philosophy-01-on-horizons-01/

Ah yes the smooth flowy Javascript stuff is what made it quite different. Happy to keep our current FF format and put a fancified version on the roadmap if/when a project wanted to go that route. The swipe-left-to-read was a very different experience + the mix of stills and video seemed like a nice twist.
