The fact this did not function on the Temple was apparently considered a bug, caused by the disconnecting of the nuke weapon from the Temple. Apparently this had an impact on internal statistics concerning which House destroyed what, so it was fixed in the Remaster. Meaning, in the Remaster (and VanillaTD too I assume) the Temple also can't damage itself.
I'm not sure this should be considered a bug, though. It's an oddity, but given the rule of suppressing damage to the one causing it (which is vitally important for making Flamethrowes function) it makes sense, and the fact units identify the threat and go after it is kind of neat (though I guess also kind of exploitable in some situations, like the Covert Ops mission "Under Siege")
