One Year Anniversary

My first “proper” post to this blog was on September 5th 2022 (I don’t count the test post from August 2nd). A week later, I retired from my role at Autodesk. It’s hard to believe that I’ve been doing this for a year.

Hi Tim,

There's so much in this post that resonates with my own experiences: once upon a time my own blog took on a life of its own and ended up having a huge impact on my life and career.

I did find that over time I stopped looking at my blog stats in the same way. Part of this was the depressing fact of daily page views in the 4K range dropping to less than 1K, for reasons that were probably mostly beyond my control: a shift in our industry, a growing preference for video content, the death of RSS and the rise of social media as the way to advertise content (while the prioritisation remains at the whims of the platform's algorithm), etc. etc. but it was also because I ended up realising it's not the point: I increasingly found the act of creation to be the reward, with the occasional comment from an old friend giving a sense that there's someone out there who cares.

Anyway, do keep fighting the good fight. I found the insights in your posts particularly helpful to me lately, as I ended up in several discussions where your anti-patterns were of great relevance. No, this was not a good thing, on balance.

All the best,

Kean

Great to hear from you Kean. Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a thoughtful reply. It may not have come across in the post (it's fun to play with self-deprecation) but I think the same way as you. I would be writing this stuff anyway to organize my thoughts. It's a bonus if anyone else reads it and finds value. I was surprised at how much of an emotional response I get when I do receive a comment or reaction.

Glad the organizational anti-patterns resonated with you and sorry that you're in a situation where they had the opportunity to resonate!
