From what I understand, this is not possible with terrain generation. As a result, you'd have to build caves/mines as you would indoor levels. This is way games like Skyrim, etc., may have a cave entrance (usually made from a model or models on the side of the terrain) that ultimately send the player to a new level, which is the cave interior.
That's a shame, i'd like to make a seamless transition that would take you from point A to B through a mountain tunnel without having to create an entirely extra level, as these levels can already can be quite massive and would just bring some more life into them.
There are a reason that most games systems don't do this or try really hard to hide that they can't do this. There are ways to fake it, if you're good with modeling and blending your models in with terrain. You just have to get creative. And, in this case, it would not be an engine/MAX request, but up to the end-user to figure out how to do it.
It's not possible now but maybe in the future. It will be something we will want to do when the time is right.
Being able to make holes in hills and mountains and shaping out caves, this is something that is currently impossible without a lot of hassle, but would add more flexibility in level design, you could also make bunkers, and whole underground sections with this mechanic.
This would also be useful with the upcoming RPG creation mode, where you could enter a cave to fight hostile mobs for instance.
