Is it possible to play this game in a virtual machine?

Only 1 person has reported success with a virtual machine, with numerous people reporting failure.

VWware products seem to get about this far (nasty graphics problems):

Virtual Box is reported to give a black menu, and crash if loading a level.

As it appears Virtual Machine support is not a thing, I'm closing the issue until it potentially is revisited.

This can be partially achieved by running the game in software rendering mode with DXWnd. However this creates other issues.
