I was an avid user of ME on my rooted HTC Magic, I have since bought the HTC
Desire and am using the standard ROM. I am reluctant to root this phone and
was wondering if there is anyway to get ME running on a non-rooted phone?

Short answer => No

Long answer:
I didn't have time to do it but I have something in mind but this involves
proprietary code but it will leak on the internet somehow when it's done ;-)
(hint: will involve backsmali and refactoring)

like that?

Nope and I wouldnt count on it as the Vending.apk uses a lot of stuff that,
because of the security system, can just be accessed from a system application
but if you don't have root you cant access the system itself and can't install
a system app except the app is already there and you update it but you need the
same certificate and this means someone with google's private key would have to
sign that package...

Ok, thx for the quick reply. It shows your dedication.
So I will root my phone. Will it void warranty?

That's a good question...
Officially yes as for example on the nexus where you can officially unlock the
bootloader it asks you that you accept "warranty void" but HTC was not that
strict as I heard from other people and replaced it even if it was
rooted/unlocked and some say that telling them you are a developer may help
more...
