Sun Nov 21, 2010 09:25 AM [Question] Wiki by Draco:

Dunno where the @!$% to ask this kind of weird question; closest bet is here

MFGGWiki was loaded up with member articles, and pretty much nothing but member articles, which are not entirely useful now that a large number of their members have migrated to the Underwhere (why didn't you pick this name it'd be great to call your forum after underpants geez I guess you shoulda thought of that.)

Is -W going to utilize a similar wiki?

Sun Nov 21, 2010 09:29 AM Re: [Question] Wiki by World'sTallestLadder:

Yeah, there's going to be a wiki. I don't know if we're transferring over the MFGG wiki's stuff or what though.

Sun Nov 21, 2010 12:07 PM Re: [Question] Wiki by Kyori:

We plan on doing something like that. If MFGG wants to scrap a lot of the wiki then there's a good chance that we'll split out all of the articles that are relevant to us, first.

If they don't, then we'll likely start up our own, from scratch. It'll be a similar sort of thing, but obviously without any fangaming stuff.

A wiki would be nice since MW has enough history to have one.(thats why it wasn't made before right?) I'd even volunteer to be a sysop if needed
or get rid of the url

Honestly, as much as I love Minus World, there isn't anything of significance going on that would benefit a wiki.

Wikis for communities like Minus World are usually stupid @!$% centered on everyone writing their own biased articles and covering every stupid little dramatic moment on the forum. MFGG is a great example of this. 99% of the articles are articles individual members have created about themselves with the other 1% being useful, factual information.

This. At least MFGG has stuff worth writing articles about (fangames, engines, etc). We have nothing like that.

Fri Sep 14, 2012 08:55 PM Re: A Wiki by Draku:

forum events are good to record on a wiki

too bad we never have those

and the dupes arent even as original as the funny stories you can tell about mfgg's dupe problems

Tue Sep 18, 2012 03:49 PM Re: A Wiki by Bitteh:

I don't see why it would hurt to try out a wiki, as long as no one "pulls a Black Squirrel" (no offense Black Squirrel) and deletes all the articles about fads. I'm pretty sure that wouldn't happen anyway since our main focus isn't fangaming... but if like in 40 zillion years (exaggeration) Minus World does have a main focus, I wouldn't like to see fad articles removed.

Overall I guess the only harm would be that it's just too much extra work. So no. I change my mind. Don't do it. (I'm still keeping the above stuff because I want to say what I said. T_T)

Setting up a wiki is like 5 minutes work, tops. If people want it I could just do it in between jobs.

It would give people something to do and it's always kind of fun to have a record of things that happened. I liked MFGG's wiki when it was about stuff like that. I think if we had one it'd have to have a "there is no such thing as notability" rule, so that we don't end up losing silly articles down the line when somebody wants to refocus.

Since both you and I are sysops on the MFGG wiki, we could "move" any relevant deleted articles from the MFGG wiki to the MW one.

No one said it would hurt.

The problem is that there is no reason to use a wiki and I don't want to see another MFGG wiki where everyone's using it just to create their own profile rather than offer useful information. Unlike MFGG, MW doesn't even have a main focus to talk about so it could potentially be worse.

I'm perfectly fine with that as long as certain people don't baww their eyes out about us acknowledging our relation to MFGG.

Tue Sep 18, 2012 10:57 PM Re: A Wiki by World'sTallestLadder:

just turn the forum into a wiki and let anyone edit anyone else's posts. it wouldn't have the history logging but we can just backup stuff we like on our own and restore it if someone changes it. staff can lock posts on request

we're working on it, don't worry[citation needed]

Fri Sep 21, 2012 05:33 AM Re: A Wiki by JoshJDubya:

Why do you want it, Yoshin? What would you contribute to a wiki about Minus World? Don't tell me that your sole desire for making it happen is to be a wiki sysop.

Haha, I remember when the Quickie-la article was first made, I had no knowledge of it.

Sure, MW doesn't have a main focus, but maybe a wiki would become some clever scrambled-egg mess of inside jokes and nostalgia. Sounds rather entertaining to me, honestly the reason I still come here is for that kind of stuff.

Sat Sep 22, 2012 10:31 AM Re: A Wiki by Oracular:

i don't think any of the good members would edit it really

Sat Sep 22, 2012 08:23 PM Re: A Wiki by Elyk:

I don't think that there's any need for a wiki. We're not pruning any posts or anything. All the information is still here on the boards.

Isn't this something that is better explained and revisited through the board itself anyway?

Sat Sep 22, 2012 10:11 PM Re: A Wiki by World'sTallestLadder:

the forum layout isn't always the best way to get information

i don't think we need to rewrite everything to a wiki either but at the very least we can admit that just saying "theres a thread where this happened somewhere on the forum" isn't a great way of storing information we want people to find

Sat Sep 22, 2012 10:13 PM Re: A Wiki by JoshJDubya:

What information is it that you want people to find, exactly?

Sat Sep 22, 2012 10:15 PM Re: A Wiki by World'sTallestLadder:

i have nothing in mind personally, but there's stuff people mentioned in this thread.

yeah I understand that and thought I added it in my post but apparently didn't?

you could just use the search function and with a little work find what you're looking for but that's obviously not as easy as a wiki

MW as a whole doesn't really have much interesting history to store there and pretty much anyone that cares was already here to experience it. I don't feel that it a wiki would be worth the work to maintain and fill. In my opinion articles on topic fads is useless and forum events might make good articles but like Draku said we don't really have any events big enough to write up. The only thing useful that I can think of is a list of competition and badge winners.
