what if there were a store where you could buy things like username changes,
or (based on recent suggestions) avatar hats? currency for the store would be
based on your posts (for an example, 1 point per post, 5 for a topic, etc)
perhaps you could also dock users points for hidden posts or getting banned,
if you'd really want to enforce that
In order to sell name changes, that would require automation. Making name
changes automatic is a terrible idea as there would be no filter to prevent
offensive names and the like. Also, it would be considerably harder to manage
a name change log, if you cut out the communication with the staff.
As for any store modifications, I personally don't like them because they
don't really add anything new or worthwhile. Also, people earning currency for
quantity and not quality? @!$% that noise. If anything you should earn
currency for positive ratings on a post or likes... which should be added
before we do anything like adding a store.
well what about something as harmless as hats? this lets people who want hats
have hats. points won't really mean much if that's all it gets you
Well in regards to
this discussion,
an option to turn them off or turn them off except for special events seems to
be a popular vote so this wouldn't work in that regard.
Kyori suggested MinusPoints back when we just opened the board. I brought up
the idea again later when we were discussing making a new forum.
Elyk:
Levels don't mean anything. Each level has a larger gap between the two. Minus
points can be rewarded for stuff ranging from winning a competition to even
just posting. Numbers in the image are arbitrary.
Achievements/Badges would be listed in reverse chronological order. They would
include a date along with the description with old badges just given the date
that the system was implemented. There could also be a badge search function,
where you could search for the winners of sprite comps, or participants of
every secret santa, or people that took place in events before/after a certain
date. Mousing over the image wouldn't tell you the name of the award but how
many minus points it was worth. Alternatively we could do the reverse where
name is mouseover, minus points are listed, or even just list both
(Competition Win! 50-p)
This was brought up once again not long ago by Teddy in the development area
for the mainsite but with the store idea instead. Point would be used for name
changes, cosmetic stuff like hats/name colors/custom member bars. You'd
receive points mainly by posting but also for stuff like getting replies to
your thread or getting likes on a post you made in addition to the competition
wins I mentioned.
I still think it's a cool idea but the amount of work that would be required
to go into it is a bit too much right now, especially since Kyori is the only
one who can do it and is still busy with his website project.
i googled for a second and saw that there are store mods for phpBB but this is
just a "hey what do we think of this" suggestion rather than a "I DEMAND HAT
STORE" suggestion
I wouldn't worry about me not being able to work on stuff. I said I'll help
out, so if something needs doing it'll get done. It just might take a bit
longer than it would if it was the only thing I was focusing on.
Also yeah minus points are good, so is a hat store.
I don't really like stores, I feel like they'd be a waste of time. Pretty big
system to set up and I feel like people wouldn't pay it any mind after maybe a
month

My experiences have proven this to be true with nearly every extraneous
feature of phpBB.
Back when the mainsite was a thing, I thought Minus Points could be
interesting because of the more expanded features the site would provide.
However, since that's not happening and we'll be using PHPbb for the
forseeable future, I don't think a store or money system would be good at all.
Every time I've seen it implemented it's been useless and needlessly
complicated, and it usually breaks within the first year of use, especially
with PHPbb systems. It'd be a lot of work for something that would essentially
be a fad, and I don't feel like it would work well enough to be feasible.
