we should use MyBB or SMF instead. preferably MyBB since that seems to be the
best available but SMF is pretty O.K. if for some reason that's a bad idea.
The only reason we went with phpBB was that its template system didnt allow
arbitrary php code to be run, but I don't think that's much of an issue when
we let administrators have full access to the forum code anyway (which i'm not
disagreeing with, just the whatever the setup RII had before isn't relevant
anymore). There's scripts that can transfer things, but from what I see we
might run into the following problems:
custom profile fields->not sure how well these will move over, especially
considering we do some custom stuff with the friend code fields
badges->mfgg historically has always used a custom modification for this, so
we'd probably have to redevelop that.
skins->obviously theyre not going to be compatible out of the box. don't think
it'd be too hard to convert what we alreay have by hand though, honestly the
hardest part of skinning is coming up with a good color scheme and getting the
right images for it
pretty sure all of the other modifications we've made were just to make phpbb
suck less though feel free to keep me informed
While it would be neat to put this place on a clean slate, I'm not sure it's
really needed. What we have works for now, and unless the forum crashes I
don't see much of a point of moving up.
Granted, PHPbb is hardly ideal. There are some unintentional big red buttons
in the ACP we can't press unless we want to break the forum, and I should hope
nobody ever does, so there's some stability and security issues there, but
they're fairly easy to deal with simply by being careful.
it does not work for now. it's a mess and difficult to expand upon- we might
as well close the suggestion forum as half of them aren't going to happen due
to technical limitations (not that limitations actually exist but that phpbb
is just awful to build upon).
additionally, I did not propose a clean slate. While I would not be opposed to
it, I figure with the aversion to having members be able to delete their own
posts (lol) and the fact that 90% of the memberlist would not sign up again it
wouldn't be something other people would want.
considering that a lot of suggestions are never implemented on the grounds
that it would be a pain to code, this isn't a bad idea (although perhaps these
suggestions may be difficult to code on other platforms - i am not very clued
up on Digital Poetry)
Yeah, switching from phpbb doesn't mean that the admins will suddenly be able
to supply the coding for all of those past suggestions (if they could, they
already would have, it has nothing to do with the platform).
The forum software we use does have a big impact on what we can and can't
implement, as a new system could make implementing suggestions that much
easier!! However, the task of actually implementing them is still there
While a couple suggestions may be fulfilled simply by changing forum software,
I don't see how feasible it would be to migrate posts and accounts over
between software that is not compatible with each other. There's also the fact
that all of the skins would have to be redone, modifications such as for
badges and other previously accepted suggestions would have to be redone, etc.
Feel free to link any porting software you may know about that allows for such
things, but otherwise I don't see any justification to start over on new forum
software.

i have addressed all of these concerns in the first post. heck, mcknackus even
linked to mybb's merge system directly.
and spritey brings up a good point. myBB 1.8 (i think thats what its called)
is on the horizon, so i have no problem waiting for that. it would probably be
a bad idea to move everything to 1.6 and then whoops 1.8 is out and we have to
go through an upgrade process. cool fun fact, mybb has their development on
github so we can watch that or try out early release versions too
https://github.com/mybb
I can't recommend MyBB highly enough. We used it for the last incarnation of
teotu. The badge system we had was about ten times better than the MFGG one;
we had this whole award cabinet thing in the user profiles with info such as
date given, reason, etc. There's pretty much a plugin for everything, and if
not we can make our own (I have just enough PHP knowledge to maybe be useful
there)
This sounds like a fun project so I'm willing to work on it in my spare time,
including but not limited to a snazzy new default theme. I definitely think
phpbb has outlived its usefulness.
Oh @!$%, myBB 2.0 is nearly out? Yeah, we need to do it for sure. I remember
reading the feature list back in 2013 and absolutely pining for that @!$%.
Even if it's just an alpha release, I bet it'd work for our purposes (and be
easily updated)
yeah I'd wait for beta at least but if we're going to switch we might as well
wait for 2.0 rather than go to 1.8 and deal with upgrading / porting stuff
since its apparently a major rewrite
yeah unfortunately forum softwares move pretty slow. SMF had a huge period of
waiting for 2.0 to come out and by the time it did it was way behind what MyBB
and even phpBB at that point was offering
The sad part is that they're kind of dicks about it. Google searches reveal
tons of people asking when they might possibly expect to see 2.0 even close to
release, which I think is an understandable question regarding a piece of
software that has failed to meet at least two separate - and quite generous -
deadlines. They always reply with some form of "we don't give release dates,
it will be released when it's done".
Like that's all well and good, but when you've been saying the same thing for
three years, I think that excuse starts to wear reeeally thin. The least they
could do is not be extremely rude and robotic about it; I mean excuse the
@!$% out of me for enjoying their software and being excited to use it.
I realize they're working for free, but if it's such a goddamn burden,
nobody's forcing them to develop free software lol
It would be cool if people tried to make their own forum softwares more often.
That seems like it'd be really fun/interesting and probably something you
could learn about online if you were dedicated.
I'd try it myself if I didn't have higher priority, more immediately relevant
goals

I have wanted to design forum software specifically catered toward the MFGG/MW
experience for years, but it's such a huge undertaking and pretty useless for
most people considering all the existing alternatives
the basics of a forum probably aren't too difficult to create, its all the
extra stuff that people tend to rely on nowadays that'll kill ya.
From what I've seen of MyBB (even older versions) its a really good base to
start building a customized forum off of, and as an added bonus those plugins
/ themes you create for customization could be given back to the mybb
community.
discourse was a cool approach to building up a forum from scratch and I
thought they got a lot of good features in there. there's just a handful of
things about it that suck so much its unusable (deployment, infinite scroll,
skins/themes are horrible on it- these are just off the top of my head)
