Granted, these aren't organized or ongoing projects, but they're getting infinitely more engagement than we've gotten since I launched this project in March. Naturally, I'm a little frustrated.
So, I went as far as to post an issue on one of those top projects--only to have it closed for reasons unknown (though obvious).
That said, there is some good that has come out of this. Some of these projects have some pretty good ideas. For instance, we could start a profiles folder full of user profiles in markdown. That way, people can shamelessly share their own projects while increasing some engagement here. Maybe we can do something like that.
I took a look at the top repos in Hacktoberfest and many of them are clones of this project:
