I'm very excited about the possibility of the things network, but in this example, that's a lot of pcb to be delivery temperature. Is all that to support LoRaWAN?

I assume you are talking about The Things UNO? These are really meant to be prototype boards for developers to quickly develop and test devices. A real finished device can be a lot smaller and less battery-consuming.
