Having the mysterious disappearing navigation menu #13

Hi there. I'm having the same issue outlined at:

http://themeawesome.com/support/forums/topic/navigation-menu-showing/

  1. I have disabled all plugins to no avail
  2. This is a fresh install of WordPress 4.0 running on a local dev AMPPS server
  3. I have imported content from WP Test but it was doing this before I had any content in the install.
  4. I have tried both WP-Forge and WP-Starter, both do the same thing.
  5. I have created menus titled Main Menu, Footer Menu and Social Menu.
  6. The footer menu shows only the / separators with no text in between, even though the live page source shows the few pages I added to the menu.

Any ideas?

As I mentioned in the thread you referenced above I have never experienced this issue. Every time I install WP-Forge or a WP-Forge/WP-Starter mix on a site and create menus, they all appear. And I have installed both of these themes on different types of hosting servers.

I don't have an answer as to why this happens. The only thing I can think of is to maybe clear your cache, but other than that the steps that were outlined in that thread should work.

I am sorry I don't have an appropriate answer.

I just downloaded and re-installed (wp-forge-master) from this repository whereas I had previously installed from themeawesome on Monday. It's cleared up now. Can't really explain it either!

Hmmmm that is very strange. Now this is going to bother me....lol, but glad it got worked out, again sorry I didn't have a better answer.

I actually am still having the issue in the footer... only the separators are showing. Perhaps I need to reinstall WP-Starter from GitHub. I'll try that (assuming it's in here somewhere).

Do you have a screenshot?

And I just downloaded WP-Starter off of GitHub and replaced the one I got from ThemeAwesome with it. Here's the screenshot (still in the footer):

And here's Dashboard > Appearance > Menus > Footer Menu:

The versions of the theme are the same no matter where you get them, either off of GitHub or my site. The only difference is one adds "master" to the end the other doesn't. When I tried to look at those screenshots all I got was a 502 Bad Gateway message. If you can please email the screenshots to me. Please keep in mind that I will be at work later so my reply will not come until later this afternoon.

@GRAPHICpilot - your screenshots worked for a minute and then I got the same error as before There is an additional menu location in the footer for a menu containing pages. When you go to appearance > menus you will see a tab called manage locations and when you click on it it shows three menu locations Main Menu, Footer Menu and Social Menu.

You can use this section to assign menus to the locations you want. I would suggest you make sure the proper menus are in the right locations, click save changes. Then I would go into the Customize > Navigation Section > Main Navigation and make sure the menus are appearing in the locations you assigned them to. Also you may want to read below as well:

@baringji - The social menu was created from this post by Justin Tadlock and only links are supported. So if you have pages added to the footer menu, you will only see a / instead of the actual icon for whatever social site you have added. So if you have any / in the footer of your site, I would suggest that you go into the social menu and add actual links to your profiles instead of pages.

I will update the information about the Social Menu to reflect the fact that it does not accept pages but only links.

@baringji and @tsquez thanks for the help! It turns out it (the footer social menu) had everything to do with them being pages and not links. Thanks! With the other issue, I can't explain it but once I re-uploaded a fresh copy of WP-Forge from GitHub, my disappearing menus issue.... disappeared. Thanks a ton for being so responsive!
