Don't think I've done anything wrong, but I aint getting the option for widescreen resolutions in MatrixOptions.exe

DrMerlin commented 4 years ago

It worked for me insofar as it added WS resolutions to the launcher. But the game wouldn't start from the launcher at that point. :( I had to revert to the original launcher (without the WS resolutions) to get the game to start.

eduonlinebr commented 3 years ago

It didn't work for me either. The file matrix32.exe loads and close in about 2 seconds, without starting the game. If I remove the files, the game works again, But there's other mod for the game that I was able to make it works, nevertheless it doesn't got the 3440x1440 resolution that I use at home.

francescosalvi commented 3 years ago

the trick for me was to patch the game to v1.52 (https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/528-enter-the-matrix/), after that the options launcher displayed all the resolutions (including nvidia's super resolutions!)

Hm, yeah, I usually work on latest available versions, so unpatched ones weren't even tested. If they are drastically different, then widescreen fix won't work.

What almost no one seems to know, is that Atari released a updated 2004 or 2005 version of the game under the Best of Atari label. This build of the game has a higher version than 1.52 and fixes some of the PC versions issues such as FPS dropping without LOD on. But it also added some new minigames. The launcher looks completely different too and the exe of the game is of course also different and has a 2004 timestamp. 1.52 came out in 2003.

Sadly this updated stuff was newer released in a patch and is only available when you install a 2004 or 2005 CD/DVD copy of the game. Also seems like this version has no copy protection but could also be Win10 disabling it...

Sadly your widescreen fix doesn't work with this build of the game. Any chance for support? Can send you the game copy in question but should also be on Archive.org.

I can confirm what @CodingPigFromTheBushes has observed; there are at least two game revisions that are newer than Patch 1.52.

The DVD-ROM edition appears to fix the LoD performance bug and introduces a new launcher that is also carried over into the 2004 Edition. The 2004 Edition includes two extra mini-games (the only other platform to receive these was the PS2 Greatest Hits version).

I can't vouch for the lack of copy-protection, however. In my attempts to run these, both versions appear to require a play disc and will refuse to launch without it. The only way around this soft requirement is to use the DEViANCE No-CD executable that has become the standard, but this will downgrade the game to 1.52.

In either case, this widescreen fix does not appear to be compatible with either the later DVD-ROM Edition, nor the 2004 Edition.

Thanks for the breakdown @mmillar-bolis, this inspired me to port the widescreen fix to yet another version of the game, which I found here: https://www.gamepressure.com/download/enter-the-matrix-v12-intel-845-chipset-patch/z811cc

Patch v1.2 Matrix.exe

As you can no doubt tell by the build date, this is somewhere between the DVD-ROM edition and the 2004 edition with all the fixes that entails along with the benefit of it also being the only official DRM-free executable for the game to my knowledge.

I'm planning on sending a pull request once I've done some more testing however there is a slight problem in that Patch v1.2 doesn't update MatrixOptions.exe but the required patch is different for the DVD-ROM version, therefore there may need to be a DVD-ROM specific variant of the fix to account for this.

If anyone has a burning desire to play the least buggy version of the game in widescreen right now, I've attached a copy of the modified widescreen fix for the combination of Patch v1.2 and MatrixOptions.exe from the DVD-ROM release below.
