Pre-sentient genetically engineered "sub-"species appearing on uninhabitable planets? #11

I had this happen to me once.

I had my mammalian race, I first colonized some Barren, Gas Giant, etc. planets with Synthetics. Then after building the buildings that increase habitability... I settled some of my own species to my planet.

After a few clock ticks, they genetically engineered themselves into a new "sub-species" : pre-sentient insects. I swear I'm not making this up. My sentient mammals turned into pre-sentient insects, as a result of "adaptive genetic engineering".

And I'm all like "Say whaaaaaat?".

This has happened to me too (although my mushrooms became birds).

I'm not entirely sure if this is a bug or not. Maybe I'll have to dig through the events files.
