When trying to update the cover image, it will open a file explorer window where you can choose your file, if you select one and select "Open", it will briefly open a "copying" window, complete, and do nothing. The chosen image never appears and nothing seems to have happened.
When switching between selected themes several times, I was able to see the Thorium logo as the cover image for the Thorium Default theme once for a split second before it disappeared and left the "Click or Drop files here" icon in its place.
If I restart Thorium, the cover images will show once. But if you select another plugin and then go back to the original, it stops displaying the cover image. This happens for both the default and any other plugins.
