Recipients table - include count of number of funders #424

Open stevieflow opened 6 years ago

On this: http://grantnav.threesixtygiving.org/recipients

imho, it would be really useful to include a column that declares how many different funders fund each recipient. This would make it very useful to look for mult-funder-funded examples, for example

Pinging @KDuerden , @BobHarper1 and @morchickit for thoughts. This is just an observation I had whilst using this page

KDuerden commented 6 years ago

If it is easy to do, I can see that it is useful. It will throw the issue of un-reconciled Org IDs into relief. Not necessarily a bad thing, but explanatory text for this view might be needed so people understand.

eta - had similar thought about Funder view and how helpful it would be to include First and Last Award date (because I currently have to maintain a manual spreadsheet and collect this info!)

On the recipient pages we do provide a figure for the number of funders: http://grantnav.threesixtygiving.org/recipient/GB-EDU-133902 -

But - not sure what overhead is involved in then bringing that into the table view of all recipients.

@robredpath ?

BobHarper1 commented 6 years ago

That would be useful - it shows off the potential and intended purpose of the Standard (& Grantnav). I was looking for "multi-fundered" recipients yesterday (to demonstrate to a publisher).

N.B. same to apply to the recipient table on funder pages eg http://grantnav.threesixtygiving.org/funder/360G-gatsbyfoundation

Interestingly, I was talking to @morchickit yesterday and we started to wonder who used the table pages, and for what - and whether future development effort should focus on the faceted results page, rather than the table views. So, @stevieflow - I'd be interested to know what were you using the page for when you had this observation?

If you're looking for an example of a recipient that has multiple funders, that can be easily achieved by doing a search for a common word (eg "volunteers"), and clicking on a recipient that's received a lot of grants in the Recipient Org facet - the two or three I tried that had double-digit numbers of grants had received those from multiple funders.

All that said, if the consensus is that it'd be useful, we can certainly look at doing it as part of the UI work that we're doing in the first part of 2018!

My user story was that I just clicked on the big text on the GN homepage : "Recipients", to get to this table.

that can be easily achieved by doing a search for a common word (eg "volunteers"),

But I don't care or want to filter through a keyword here - I just want to go straight to the recipients...

robredpath commented 6 years ago

@stevieflow - ok, what's your 'so that'? "As a member of the 360Giving team, I want to be able to quickly find a recipient of funds from multiple grantmakers so that....."?

stevieflow commented 6 years ago

"so that.....I can demonstrate how differently published datasets can connect around shared use of common identifiers" !!!

As 360 staff using GrantNav for advocacy and publisher support I never use Recipient view. It has no relevant information for my work.

I frequently use individual recipient views with multiple funders in presentations and 121 support to demo power of Standard & org IDs. I use prepared examples but often have to search, download & vlookup to discover relevant examples.

A Recipient list view with no. of funders would provide a ready source of these examples, which I could use & direct people to for their own discovery. I anticipate an updated Recipient view becoming a useful and user friendly advocacy tool. I would show it off all the time.
