Products: Featured products

The ability to mark products as "Featured" by ticking off a radio box next to 
the product in the listing in the admin. 
When a product is marked as "Featured", it should be selectable on the frontend 
in the "Products" page type and as a widget in the "Panels".

what do you mean by "selectable"?

Also, is this different from simply adding it to a category named "featured"?

I mean that in the admin under the Products page type and in the Panels the 
store owner can select to show "Featured" products.

It is not different from adding it to a category named "featured", but I have 
had several customers asking for it. The advantage is, that they don't have to 
enter every product and add them to the category, but can tick them off in the 
product listing.

perhaps a generic solution would be to allow a number of categories to be added 
to the main product list columns as tick-boxes, so you could add products not 
only to "featured", but also "weekly special", "reduced to clear", and other 
similar categories.

also, maybe product wrappers could be adjusted on the front-end to add classes 
named after the categories the product is a member of, so products with the 
class "featured" could be highlighted in some way, etc
