Something based on these pictures/prototypes comes to mind:

Basically a map that covers the whole country but adds ranges around each airport. For high-altitude (relatively speaking) cross-country planning 🙂

Problem with this is the sheer amount of data that would need to be processed.

TL;DR Doing it live is pretty slow and uncovers some nasty bugs in the polygon boolean logic. Bummer. However, with pre-computed ranges this might actually work pretty well as Mapbox just ate the GeoJSON pretty quickly without any hiccups or lag at all.
