Adding information for potential consumers. And showing a brief history of the library.

Hi @pmeulen as a freshup for myself, I started the maintenance work with updating the README. I added some sections that would be informative to a future college, or potential use of the library.

And if you feel like it, feel free to jot down some of your findings from the discovery & maintenance work you did last month. My aim is to keep on contributing to the documentation throughout the coming sprint.
