The fact, [2]: is not recognized as a link definition, is a bug causing the click on the ref not being found. I need to fix this...
ah, i see... i guess it's the same for the 13 i tested.

Reference Style links work now as expected

Not sure that i really like the way you implement the rendering of the reference-style links.
Ordinary links are rendered as (clickable) links. Image links are rendered as (clickable) links AND the link target is still visible after the link. I think this is a nice way of doing this without hiding information.
For reference-style links
Suggestions - use the same way as for image links:
