Sagethumbs breaks Windows 8 metro apps icons?? #30

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install Windows 8 (clean)
2. Install Sagethumbs on the Win8 PC
3. 'Metro' apps on the start screen lose their icons (but not their
functionality)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Please provide any additional information below.

I wrote the summary this as a question, not a statement, because I'm not sure
about the cause and effect here. But I do know that my Win8 metro apps' icons
vanished a few days into the new build (clean install, Win8 Enterprise Eval.
release, on a new machine), and that's about when I installed Sagethumbs.

For the record, I find Sagethumbs more valuable than Metro Apps, at least in
their early form, but if this is really an issue, I though I should post it.

The Microsoft community forums have noticed this as well, e.g.:

Followup - I can confirm that UNINSTALLING Sage Thumbnails brings back the
icons to the 'metro' app tiles on the start screen.

I have this problem too, It only seems to affect metro apps that are newly
installed, or updated, apps that existed before sage thumbs was installed,
remain the same.

I tried setting access and computer defaults to "Microsoft" to restore file
associations, but this had no effect. I have attached a screenshot. I can
confirm that uninstalling sage thumbs resolves the problem.

I want to mention one more thing, though I'm even less sure here of cause and
effect. But I realize, looking back, that when Sagethumbs was installed on
Win8, not only were some of the new-style tile icons broken; but also,
system-wide, regular file icons (like for .exe or .dll files) were sometimes
painfully slow to enumerate in File Explorer (the new name for Windows
Explorer). I didn't connect the two at the time, but looking back, I wonder if
there was a connection.

Eventually, other problems with the metro apps (which had nothing to do with
Sagethumbs) forced me to completely reinstall Win8 yesterday. So, as of now, I
have a clean install with no history of Sagethumbs. And, on this install,
regular file icons are enumerating normally in Explorer.

I also had this problem with an upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8, with
Sagethumbs already installed. I tried various things, but the one that finally
sorted it was going to SageThumbs options, and deselecting all, and then just
selecting the file types that are specifically useful to you (for me it's .psd
files, - I only use SageThumbs as Adobe seem unwilling/unable to give explorer
compliant thumbnails).

HTH

Cheers,
Nige

In case it helps, I'm using the x64 version of Windows 8 and sage thumbs, and I
can confirm that deselecting sage thumbs from rendering thumbnails for all file
types fixes the problem, presumably one of the default selected ones is the one
causing trouble.

Can you sort problem file extensions in SageThumbs options by disabling its one
by one, please?

Hi - I'm the original poster. Time permitting (unfortunately, not much), I'll
try reporting on issues as they become apparent after a re-install of
SageThumbs 2.0.0.15 on Win8 64-bit developer release preview.

Currently I have reinstalled it and, in my SageThumbs options, I have
DESELECTED all file types except for .psd and .ai. (I'm in the same boat as
Nige who posted 11/7.)

The remaining settings are as shown in the attached .gif. I have the same
settings for SageThumbs 32-bit.

With these settings, the 'metro' start screen apps look normal - the tiles are
live and updating, and the apps that show only an icon rather than live updates
are showing their proper icons on the start screen.

However, in Windows Explorer ('file explorer' in Win8), GIF, JPG, and PNG files
have LOST their native ICONS, by which I mean not the thumbnails you get in
'large icons' view but the icons you get in 'details' view. The icons for these
three file types are now just blank white rectangles, rather than the
blue-and-white design they were showing prior to this reinstallation of
SageThumbs.

I have never messed with the default program for these file types. It has
always been, and continues to be, the Photos app that is new to Win8 and
appears on the Start Screen.

The THUMBNAILS for these three file types in 'large icons' view, presumably
provided by Windows since I deselected those file types from SageThumbs, still
work fine.

I do not currently notice any slow enumeration of icons as per my 10/27
comment. I have not noticed any other irregularities.

I will remain on the lookout for anything worth reporting, and I will slowly,
over the coming days, re-select certain file types to be handled by SageThumbs
rather than Windows. and I'll report back as time permits.

Installed Sage Thumbs in compatibility mode for windows 7 and everything works
fine (on Windows8 x64).

Tiles that where installed before Sage Thumbs are live but newly installed ones
are blank.

De install/restart/Install Sage Thumbs and all tiles are live again.

Hmmm...myself, I was never able to get .ai thumbnails to work properly with
Sage, even on Win7.

Btw, SLBarnes, the best solution for pdf thumbs in 64-bit windows, Win7 or
Win8, is to install the 64-bit msi installer for the PDF-Xchange viewer. Even
if you know how to hack Adobe reader to provide 64-bit thumbs, the PDF-Xchange
viewer's thumbs load faster and are superior.

Amazing that even though Win8 includes a native PDF viewer, it still provides
no thumbnails. And that even Adobe Reader XI doesn't provide thumbs for 64-bit
windows. Pretty poor performance by both companies.

It's pretty clear to me that Msft has made some significant changes to the way
thumbs and file associations are handled in Win8 vs Win7, and that a lot of
this has to do with the uneasy coexistence of the new bundled 'apps', whose
coding platform is completely different, with the more traditional Windows
programs, APIs, etc. And apparently MSFT didn't make enough effort to warn
coders of 'legacy' programs how to update their offerings for Win8.

The latest example: uninstalling the OPERA browser has wreaked havoc with all
kinds of file icons and associations. All the filetypes natively associated
with the new-style apps, like GIF and JPG, have had their icons blown out. And
a lot of filetypes and protocols, even though I never allowed Opera to control
them, are now 'unassigned' after uninstalling Opera.

@ jbdzm; thanks for the tip, I'll give that PDF-Xchange app a gander, as it
sounds like what I'm looking for.

As for the .ai extensions, all I did, really, was just install NVIDIA's
Developer tools plugin for Photoshop (it comes in x64 and x86 flavors), and the
things just started showing up in the preview pane and (occasionally, depending
on size) in Windows Explorer, or whatever they call it in this version ... I
think I may have gotten lucky, sort of like the saying that 'Even a blind pig
finds a truffle every now and again.'

I've experienced the same problem with OPERA, however not as severe as you
mention. Myself, it seems that if I try to use an aftermarket browser, GNU,
Mozilla, or otherwise, I often have a few extensions that lose basic
assignments within Windows 8. I found a project in Source Forge called (I
believe) Extension Restore that helped get things back to normal.

Again, I wish I knew more about the technical aspects so that I could give more
solid and useful information concerning (the very few) issues I've had with
Sage Thumbs. Nevertheless, I still feel it is a useful and feature-rich
application that deserves an extra amount of support from the community.

Thank you for your advice and I will look into that app you mentioned. Cheers!

Please don't discuss other problems here except Windows 8 Metro issue.

P.S. To fix Adobe PDF thumbnails you can use this:

I've noticed that when sagethumbs is installed after the upgrade to Windows 8
it seems to work. But if I install or Update a "Modern-App" the app-icons are
lost once again.
I hope this hint will help you to fix the issue.

I'm having the exact same problem on Windows 8 Pro 64.

I think this happens during startup or login.

I found a temporary workaround. Go into the SageThumbs dialog, clear the
thumbnail cache... When you go back into the start menu, the tiles will begin
to slowly go back to normal, and it seems to stay that way for the remainder of
the user session.

In SageThumbnails Options deselect png, metro apps icons come back. (mast make
change on tile if small make it larger and back)

Just uncheck the "use thumbnails in Explorer" and "Use thumbnails as icons in
Explorer", that should be sufficient.

#20 is correct. Uncheck png, clear thumbnail cache and restart the windows
explorer process. Not sure if a permanent fix or temporary yet.

I will retry installing Sage Thumbs and simply disable PNG. I do believe this
should be better protected in Metro. I've read other image libraries do the
same thing.
I am disappointed it took so long to find a resolution.
