Omit panel mounted tape head? #6

Would there be any negative effects of omitting the panel mounted tape head (just not soldering it on)? I'd like to make the wand instead, only have one tape head, and see basically no reason why I personally would utilize the panel mounted one.

so - I put this together and the tape head simply doesn't seem to work, but the Head input does. I'm thinking of pulling the tapehead and building a wand. Did you build it omitting the tapehead on the panel? If so - how did it work out?
