professionally built Turing Machine acting crazy when DIY Pulse is connected #1

Hello,

I built a DYI Pulse for my professionally built Turing Machine. What happens is:

as soon as I plug the ribbon cable coming out of Turing's back Pulse pinout into the Pulse expander the Turing seemingly stops randomizing voltages, and the notes resulting from it are all the same, with very slight variations, that sound more like a slight detuning. I've also noticed that it's impossible to zero-out Turing's feed using the Write switch, I may even hold the switch down for as long as I'd like until no pulse comes out of it, but as soon as I let go of it Turing starts spitting sequenced notes (I can give a more detailed description upon request).

the Pulse expander on the other hand seems to be working just fine, spitting pulses according to these random uncontrollable pulses generated by the Turing.

at first I thought I had fried the SMD on the Pulse during assembly and ordered replacement chips, only to solder in a new one and run upon the same exact behavior.

has this issue been documented before? I don't know which of the modules is the faulty one. I've tested all of the resistors on the Pulse using a Multimeter and they all seem fine, even replaced the SMD, and the Turing never showed any signs of irregularity in its functioning, in fact the person who built it did a nice and clean job with the soldering and all, from what I can tell.

any ideas on what might be causing this strange behavior? help!

att

Tomaz

Have you checked the ribbon cable to the expander is the correct way around?

hi @TomWhitwell , thanks for the reply!

I did check the cable yes. Red goes to Red!

I've just tried soldering a third new 4081 chip, to no avail. cleanest solder yet, quick and painless. And the issue is indeed with the Pulses expander, I tried using it with a friend's Turing Machine and as soon as I connected the ribbon cable his TM presented the same behaviors. Also tried another ribbon cable, but still the same. I've ran out of ideas.
