Attempt readme improvements for new users #18

I was trying to work through this as a first time user and I wanted to share back what (I think) is expected of new users. Would someone check and provide feedback if this is correct as-is, or if I'm misunderstood anything.

Happy to make any necessary edits if this can help the next person.
