It should play with only ALSA without any issues.

Is jack required? Trying to install it on a dietpi rpi 3b+ w/ hifidac+

Late reply, but jack is not required. Note that this is the docker complaining that the Device does not exists (inside docker image) happens also on Hifiberry, and can be ignored. I think if we mount all sound devices it should be gone.
