This is important for the GQueues bot which used XMPP with google talk before.

It is also important for those who are switching from IRC and want to bring
their bot.

I'm pretty surprised this doesn't exist already. Seems like a particularly
useful feature. Please add.

Strange thing is that the chat inside a Hangouts window is completly
disconnected from the chat inside Gmail/Hangouts Mobile App. If you go in a
Hangouts window and send messages (in the right chat panel), the other end
won't get those messages through GMail/Hangouts App. Same goes for the other
way.
Furthemore, XMPP being abandonned, if no API is proposed for Hangouts chat
conversations, might as well say that Google is locking itself just as Apple.

So, this is a big problem, and it's important that google treats this as, at
the least, a medium-high level of priority. There are plenty of people trying
to use hangouts for serious things, like software deployments. We need a
record of the conversations in the chat window, and without them it makes it
hard to justify using a platform without such a basic feature. The mustaches
are great, don't get me wrong, but please just give me some xml or some format
so we can get this record.

This all sound like Oyoyoy :)

Google sees everyone using closed services like whatsapp and Apple's products.
Google does the math and concludes that the world is closing up, people are
still happy about it, and the closed products make good money.
Google wants to be part of this show.

Instead of whining - yes, i'm talking to you - start uninstalling closed apps
and services!
Start using the most open platforms.
Make your friends, family and coworkers contact you using open platforms - if
any such exists....

are google's XMPP servers officially dead? Can I still use them? I can still
ping xmpp-server.l.google.com

Last I heard newer style Hangout chats no longer use the XMPP servers but they
are still running as not everybody has transitioned to Hangouts yet.

this one currently still works: talk.google.com.

in fact, there is a bridge between hangouts chat and google talk xmpp servers.
but they will probably shut down xmpp servers one day when enough people have
migrated from GTalk to Hangouts. the bridge works in a strange manner: some
messages get through others don't. if one send a msg from GTalk to a migrated
gtalk-to-hangouts user, he might get the msg, but I think the other way around
doesn't work well.

anyways, just give us an API for chat for google plus/hangouts users. this will
avoid us screwing around with some other google plus APIs such as Activities,
Moments and Comments to send a simple message to a google plus user.

Seriously - if Google would allow code to listen to / be invited in / interact
with chats there is a world of possibilities. IRC, slack, XMPP are platforms
that allow this and there are good reasons for google to open up similar apis.
Chat ops or chat with the internet of things...
