Access to activities associated with event #737

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Describe in detail the new feature you would like to see added

Previously event comments were actual comments on one event post that could be
queried with a `comments.list` request.

With the current change rolling out, where actual posts/activities are
associated with an event, this approach to read activity from an event is no
longer possible.

What I'm looking for is a method like activities.listByEvent(eventId) which
would return all (public) activities associated with the event.

Describe your use case, or some example use cases, for this feature

My own use case is for Hangout/HOA events where the audience can use the event
to interact with the hangout via comments. Tools like Comment Tracker and
Hangout Toolbox allow the participants of the hangout to easily track those
comments as they come in and react live to their audience.

Another use case I can think of, is if you have a website associated with an
event, and want to have a "live-wall" on the website to show what people are
talking about in your event.

I hope for a quick fix!
The comments tracker is one of the best tools there is for HOA's!

it is quite obvious from what was rolled out last night that whoever
designed/programmed it doesn't have any idea whatsoever as to how the average
user actually uses the Event Page.

With the new 'campaign style' multi posts allowed in 1 event, the common
(valuable) use case in the past (i.e. yesterday) was to Host a HOA live video,
let the viewers comment on it while it was live and feature those comments via
the Comment Tracker tool - or by visually identifying them - and bring them
into the live show. This was what made Live HOA valuable... INTERACTION.

With this new issue, unless resolved by grabbing all comments from all posts
inside the Event via tools like Comment Tracker, removes the main interactive
component to live viewing... why not just come back later? No reason to
interact live as there is no way feasible to have the host of the HOA identify
comments and bring them into the show live as they are/will be too scattered.

Clear and focused communication adds huge value to HOAs and Events. The
roll-out of the feature that allows posts to be added to the event outside of
the comment stream will cause people to isolate themselves from the main
conversation, while at the same time distracting others and de-valuing the
overall experience.

I would love to see a list of objectives that were being targeted when the
decision was made to launch this initiative. I see very few positives, but
would like to keep an open mind.

Please bear in mind that this is a specific developer-relevant feature request
and not a place to discuss the actual event comment features being rolled out.
The Google+ Help community is probably a better place to discuss this:

During today's Search For Common Ground (SCFG.org) Hangout, which was assisted
by Google after failing yesterday, I saw firsthand what +Ronnie Bincer was in
an uproar about. Somebody at Google (maybe you, Gerwin Sturm?) stayed up till
the wee hours to fix it and the Hangout went pretty well today. We don't all
have that option.

In addition, Ronnis Bincer is correct that the new single-screen live Hangout
with Q&A takes away some of the immediacy, excitement, and reason for being in
a live Hangout - from both the presenter's and viewer's pointsof view. I was
able to work around it in a clunky way by putting up the event screen on one
monitor (or window) and the live Hangout window in another. It makes it feel
more Power-Point-like. I'll send you the screenshot that I took.

Comments I did make in defiance of the New Order were posted to my Public
profile, which then had to be cleaned up. In the past, the Event page contained
those comments and was a good resource for presenters, viewers, and those who
missed the Hangout who wanted to go back and round up the major points and
exact times in the video that they were referring to.

Thanks for considering these issues - maybe you can work some magic to let
presenters activate the comment roll in a whole new, exciting, and effective
way. If not, please leave it alone for a while so we can digest the changes! I
had my own Indie Office Hours Hangout fail on Tuesday, and have heard from many
others who are floundering with the new SHOA(E) configuration.

We need the simplicity of one comment tracker in order to better focus on the
actual HOA content and interact easily.

Google does such a great job in taking usage into account when it makes
changes. It looks to me that the change was done to create a BETTER user
experience. However, I believe that in practice this would NOT be the case.
Thank you for reconsidering this change.

This is a function that we as users need to have available.

Interactive hangouts are really helpful for those who are doing any type of
marketing.

Interactive hangouts allows for direct interaction between audience, as this is
live social media, where people interact with their friends, family, customers,
clients and interested parties.

able to monitor all conversations and respond to them easily in the live event

One of the most important features of HOAs is interactive comments. To use it
efficiently and effectively, HOA hosts need the ability to quickly and easily
access all the comments, without having to look in multiple locations/comment
threads so the single thread concept is extremely important. Please hit the
"Undo" button!

Google struggles with FRAGMENTATION. Post streams fragment into shares. Android
devices don't stay current. It's an old story. But this time Google CAN get it
right! Every HOA is a single shared event. Why would you (or anyone) want
multiple live interactive streams associated with this single HOA event? Keep
it simple. One interactive stream for every HOA event!

Please please resolve the mobile to live event problem. The frustration is
barely tolerable. I have missed many live events. Anyone can watch the video
later. What's important is the interaction.
Example: today's Relationship Event with +Wade Harmon.
