in order to harness more mobile-centric features and elements (e.g. touch gestures), bootstrap is to be gradually decomissioned and replaced with ionic framework instead:

test install ionic framework and see how borked the build gets
determine how best to gradually phase in ionic framework:
- either by overriding the app render and building from there, or
- working from the least integrated elements of the app inward

use this issue as the mother branch

results:

the website runs without exploding, however
key functionality is VERY borked. the only option is to redesign the frontend.
