Ocean ports are already more fun than accurate, because they measure range by the crow-flies distance, instead of tracing the route strictly through ocean biomes.
How about we take a similar non-accurate but fun, usable, and easy-to-implement approach to rivers, and simply allow ports to be planted on river biomes???
This would immediately allow places like Egypt and the middle east to flourish due to their nice river systems.
