Shift right clicking while in or out of a crouch merely goes into the traders inventory 99% of the time. Very rarely though I sometimes will manage to pick them up... but they aren't in the inventory. They are in my hands and taking up the bottom part of my screen without being in the inventory. At least that is what I remember. I haven't manage to pick up a trader for a while now.
