Textual definition

A Z0 genotype belongs to the ZW sex-determination system in which usually females are the sex with two different kinds of sex chromosomes (ZW) and males are the sex with two of the same kind of sex chromosomes (ZZ). This system is found in birds, reptiles, some insects and other organisms. However, there are moths and butterflies within this system that are female with a Z0 genotype (meaning one Z chromosome and zero W chromosomes), while males are ZZ (with two Z chromosomes).
