Textual definition
The process by which the developing animal gonad commits to its sexual fate, that is, to differentiate into an ovary that produces larger gametes (macrogametes/ova/eggs), a testis that produces smaller gametes (microgametes/sperm), or an ovotestis that produces both gametes simultaneously or alternatingly. Cnidarian and Porifera animals are hermaphrodites but lack gonads, and instead, produce both gametes in a loose aggregation.
