Hello I run an Umbrel node and I am thinking of doing this. But my node has a sizable number of sats on it already. Is this guide for those who are starting off with a fresh node?

I also run an Umbrel node and had a good amount of channels when I followed this guide to set up LNbits in a VPS. Let me know if you get stuck and maybe I can help.

Thanks I was excited to start this today but read the disclaimer and got cold feet. I'm no expert but I'm tired of the unreliability of Tor plus I want to access lnBits to do cool stuff like ln-withdraw

Hey fellas, sorry missed the questions here.

So on the disclaimer: It's there for a reason. VPS / linux operational management, tunneling and making sure to keep it up to date is something you need to be curious enough to keep investing. It's not a set and forget thing.

However, I have setup a number of nodes and tunnels, and it's reliable, and you can learn on it with skin in the game. My node is in the top25, and I rely a lot on my VPS stability and my ongoing invest.

But, what I would suggest for your cold feet: Try to get a test-node running, first. Get yourself a cheap / used Lenovo or Raspi, as your development and test-node, and exercise the process yourself there, first. It's what gives the confidence about the process, and also happily learn when you break things.

Lastly, feel free to check out Wireguard Equivalent of this guide. It looks more to comprehend, but is actually more straightforward, and easier to debug if things go south or general maintenance (eg you need to reboot the VPS for kernel-updates and the like).

Hope this helps. Ping here anytime if you wanna go about it.

Still haven’t taken the plunge yet but I keep reviewing the steps. what’s holding me back is doing all this only to improve LnBits. Doing this will not make my total routing node open to clear net would it?
