Monetarization of the OSGL work #336

Open Trilarion opened 3 years ago

Sometimes I like to think that maybe I could get a bit of money out from all the work I invest into this project. It would make me happy and probably also motivate me to do more. I hardly think it's worthwhile though to ask for some sort of donation because from similar experiences with open source projects, the amount of money that will be gathered is usually in no relation to the amount of time spent, but since this is by far my largest project, I could still at least ask for it and learn this once.

I see two possibilities.

I would aim at a minimal income of $10/month and below I would not think it's worth the effort. The question is, how much traffic does a site need before one can expect that income from advertisement?

According to some Internet sources $10/month relates to 500-2000 visitors a month or more, if the advertisement is rather unobtrusive and I would probably aim for very discreet ones. Now, the next question is, how many visitors are there? I have no clue currently.

According to the Github pages terms, they explicitely allow donation buttons and explicitely forbid primary e-commerce sites. Now, advertisement aimed at gaining $10/month may or may not count as primary e-business, but the Patreon link seems to be absolutely okay. I could though get a domain (which incurs additionaly costs) and put the rendered output there and then put advertisement on the site there).

For now I will do:

Awesome content! It's awesome that you want to get some money out of this while still letting it be free. Have you checked things like https://www.buymeacoffee.com/? They are really simple and useful for one time donations

Thanks for the link. Yes, that sounds cool. If I find some time, I can add the possibility to buy me a coffee. Until then I will continue buying my own coffee and then we will see.

Sponsors should be fine. Many Github repositories offer sponsorship as a way to donate.

Good Idea. I will need to setup a few things there, but I will use that way in the future.
