Unclear explanation on discarding data files

Based on the UG, it seems that when the json file is invalid, CulinaryContacts will immediately discard all data and start with an empty file on the next run. So I tried to do so by adding a duplicate contact.

However, when i run the app, the json file is not immediately discarded, and is only discarded when i type in a successful command (eg. list).
