I cannot reproduce this problem. I do not think it has anything to do with
checking that option.
I am puzzled, though, by your reference to "fancy OS X animation" -- there
isn't any animation when you install a configuration. When you double-click, a
small dialog window should appear and ask if you want to install the
configuration for yourself only or for all users of the computer. Click on a
button to indicate your choice, and then you should get a small window saying
that the installation succeeded.
My guess is that the reason that the .ovpn did not install the first time was
because you had one of Tunnelblick's dialog windows open. When a dialog window
is open (such as the window asking if you want to have Tunnelblick check for IP
address changes), Tunnelblick will not install configurations until you have
closed the window, usually by clicking a button to indicate your choice.
(Tunnelblick should always respond normally -- including installing
configurations by double-clicking them -- if you have the "VPN Details…"
window open because that window is not a "dialog" window.)
I will leave this issue as "New" for a few days so you can provide more
information. For example, if you un-check the "" checkbox, can you no longer
install configurations by double-clicking them?

My attempt to reproduce the issue after disabling that flag failed. It seems to
be inline with what you are saying.
However, may I know if there is a way to remove any profiles / configurations
left behind the software? I want to do that because I wanted to make sure that,
for example, the glitch only affects new installations.
By "fancy OS X animation" I was referring to Finder.app's opening animation --
sorry if that confused you. After double-clicking I was asked to confirm that I
wish to open tunnelblick, a program that I downloaded online. I also noted that
the prompt appeared repeatedly, i.e. still appears after multiple opening
attempts and clicking accept.
Thanks for your help in advance!

You can remove configurations by selecting them on the list on the left side of
the "VPN Details…" window, then clicking the little minus sign ("-")
underneath the list (it is between the plus sign ("+") and the "gear" symbol.
Did you install Tunnelblick by double-clicking the Tunnelblick icon on the disk
image that you downloaded? That's how it should be installed. You'll be asked
if it is OK to open a program that you downloaded online, then you will be
asked for your username/password to install Tunnelblick. After that, you can
eject the disk image, which you can Trash if you want (you could always
download it again if necessary).
After installing Tunnelblick, you should launch it by double-clicking
Tunnelblick in /Applications -- if you double-click the icon in the disk image
you will be installing it again.
Note: If Tunnelblick is running when you logout, restart, or shut down your
computer, it will be launched when you next log in, so most people just let it
run all the time (with or without a VPN being connected).
