Found a solution to the problem; just type the marginfigure where you want it to show up. So I just copied and pasted the marginfigure after a few paragraphs which then moves it to the next page. Not the way I usually handle figures in LaTeX but it works just fine.
In the documentation it is suggested to "move a figure or table to the next page" (p. 25). However, it is never explained how to do this. Using a normal figure environment, I can use the [p] option to allow it to move to the next page. This option does not work with marginfigure.
Perhaps what is meant here is that I should just type in \newpage and move the figure (and all subsequent text) to the next page.
It would be great to have a feature that allows for marginfigure and margintable to go onto the next page when that is best.
