Document new features #248

I'm using this PR as a place where I can play around with the new features as I document them. Not for merging or formal review yet.

Alright, @bchavet and @q0rban - here's an initial pass of a doc update for our new features, ready for your review. Ben, I pulled your branch with the reference doc updates into this PR, so if you're ok with merging it all as a bundle, we could delete your branch/PR and work in this one.

Let me know if you spot gaps, typos, or inaccuracies and such.
