The issue has been fixed within wordpress (Ticket #6562). And I think they
did so by countering the php defect by stripping posts of  but livepress
still needs to strip out the characters or livejournal will reject the
crosspost.

Strange characters that may show up like Â  or ?? when you post text that
contains 2+ spaces after a period or between words.

fixed in 2.1
