wordpress error loading blog when livejournal is down #42

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Livejournal is down
2. Load wordpress blog home page
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

When I try to load my wordpress blog, I see: Something went wrong - -32300
: transport error - could not open socket: 110 Connection timed out

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

2.1.7 on wordpress 2.6.2

Please provide any additional information below.

livejournal came back up, so I can't duplicate this anymore without
tweaking the code, but I guess I suspect the hacked class-IXR
