Some other bots work via having a visible message somewhere (in a dedicated channel or a rules channel) along the lines of "react to this message with :dragon: for he/him, :lion_face: for she/her, :apple: for they/them"

This would be a bit less public than the current system, and could probably be set up in configuration to work in parallel with the current system. It may or may not be worth the effort to set up, though.

This will be unnecessary with the switch to slash commands; the new system can be entirely ephemeral, displaying nothing to other users.
