After some experimentation with color vision deficiency simulation in colorspacious, it seems that the easiest thing to do (given the difficulty of creating a 2D palette that supports CVD) is to pick a cyclic color map that works reasonably well under all the CVD types and simply use that when a CVD safer options is desired.
It would be good if the generated palettes could be adapted to cope with various kinds and degrees of colour-blindness. I believe this may be possible by making use of the tools in colourspacious, but may require some significant alternative palette generation code.
