I guess it's something we could keep in mind. I feel like we only need to worry about it if there's some specific feature that the standard classes don't support or if it's something that would work a lot better with this package. It's not like we can't change it later.

True. I also don't want to depend on anything that doesn't come bundled with standard LaTeX distributions.

Those reasons listed on the stackoverflow page do seem pretty nice though.

They're pretty nice, but our users aren't going to benefit from them if we don't code in support ourselves. If we start doing that, we're focusing on a bunch of minutiae that should come later. For now, we just need basic stuff like margins that can be accomplished without a complicated package like this one.
