I attempted this solution for Windows 10, but it did not solve my problem. The issue (on 10 at least) appeared to be that if you don't have a "real" mouse attached Windows will never shows the cursor disappear because why display a cursor if there's no mouse attached. To workaround this I plugged in a hardware mouse to the htpc I setup and the cursor now appears.
Rather than a hardware solution, I imagine if you could setup a virtual mouse it might work the same way and force the cursor to appear. I haven't tried any of the software that creates virtual mouses though to verify.
To Windows 10 users:
First, you need to plug in a wired mouse or a wireless mouse receiver (otherwise Windows will never show the cursor).
Second, you need to change the register key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\EnableCursorSupression from 1 to 0 (otherwise Windows will hide the cursor on startup)
I'll test this and get an informational section on the readme if it's still happening.
I suspect it's because of the "touch friendly" crap Microsoft implemented to improve things for the six people in the world that use Windows without a physical cursor device.
I found a solution on Steam for that other "Controller Companion" app. I tried it and it works. Mind you, I also did the reg edit mentioned above regarding mouse suppression.

SOLVED
Windows thinks that I don't have a mouse, so the pointer was not showing. Follow theses steps to keep showing the pointer even without a mouse.
Go to 'Control Panel\Ease of Access\Ease of Access Center\Make the mouse easier to use' Check 'Turn on Mouse Keys' In 'Set up mouse keys'>'Other settings'> check 'Use mouse keys when NUM LOCK is' OFF Restart Windows without any mouse device
Brace yourselves, couch games are coming!"_**
I have just set this up to load automatically when Windows 8.1 boots, and it works great (no more mouse when I'm using the PC on the TV!).
I only had one issue when setting it up, which I think is probably an OS issue, but I thought I'd share on here in case there is an alternative solution to what I had to do or if anyone else is also looking for a solution. Once I log into Windows, the cursor is functional but completely invisible. It only reappears if I move the mouse. I got around this by following the solution on this thread, which involves editting the EnableCursorSupression registry item.
Thanks!
