[x] styles code in .R files (follows tidyverse style guide)
[x] add github actions to detect lints and compute code coverage
[x] tests for spelling mistakes
[x] uses testthat 3rd edition
[x] tidies up DESCRIPTION
[x] updates NEWS.md

Appreciate your help @IndrajeetPatil on cleaning some stuff up. Been meaning to get to several of these items but it doesn't look like I would have had time until the summer. Would you like to be added as a contributor to the package?
