STAT 545B: 2020

@UBC-STAT/stat545 I was hoping to get this done much sooner than now so that we can have a proper review procedure. Maybe we can talk about this briefly in our meeting on Monday.

Main structure decided on for 545B:

• Topics are weekly, not per-lecture.
  • Moved out character data to the last week, and absorbed functions and list-columns into their own weeks.
  • Moving to one video per week. Two per week is too demanding for me; this should free me up to participate more fully in the other parts of the course.
• Worksheets probably won't make sense for 3 out of the 6 weeks, so there are only 3 worksheets. The other 3: I have tutorials that I intend to go through.
• 5 assignments, adopting a similar structure of 545B when I taught it in 2018.

How it's structured on the course dashboard:

• adopting a "checklist" for the weekly guidance page (previously was dominated by the lecture info)
• absorbing the lecture info and demonstrations into a 'lecture notes' page; but since topics are weekly, there's one page of notes per week.
• Worksheets still have their own table.

What this means about TA tasks moving forward (I have not updated Asana yet)

• Worksheets should work out nicely, since 4 are now gone: 3 worksheets replaced by tutorials by me; 1 worksheet gone due to error in system suggesting 545B lasts til Dec 10 when in fact it's Dec 3.
• I've provided some pointers as to where we can develop assignments and worksheets from in the instructor-guides.
• Weekly guidance: I'll move up to be a primary developer, along with the worksheet leader.
• I'll need some help putting the assignments together, but the middle 3 out of the 5 assignments are already in decent shape; the remaining 2 will need some creativity.

Have our Asana tasks/deadlines been updated to reflect the changes? I see Worksheet 2B "due" an entire week before it's supposed to be delivered. Did we change the timing for the worksheet development?

Monday was chosen as the day the draft should come in, to give the review process enough time to happen. The second reader needs time to give their feedback (Wednesday), after which there should be some time remaining for the leader to incorporate the feedback.

The timing is not set in stone -- just check with the second reader about a general idea of a timeline.
