Enhancement request for this block:

Can the Featured News Article block pull in the latest news article by default with an option to override with a custom selection so that it's not a manual process to update the featured article every time a news post is added? Most of the time, Jessica just wants the latest thing showing there.

(Low priority, can wait until post-launch)

@wrenaria It was simpler to add a template field to the Recent News Query block:

I added it to https://sandbox.library.ucdavis.edu/news/

I'm not seeing a way to display a particular article as featured that isn't the latest article (am I missing it)? Like, most of the time, it will be the most recent post, but sometimes it won't be -- for example, maybe we want an important announcement to stick at the top despite other posts being made after it so it doesn't get buried, we'd want to be able to manually set that to happen.

In the v2 website, I think when it was defaulted to show the latest post as featured, that post only showed in the featured and didn't repeat in the "latest news" list that displays below it. As far as I know, the "featured" option is only ever going to be used on the dedicated News page on the website.

@jlnusbaum may have some additional thoughts about this feature / can speak to her needs here.

Right, to highlight a specific post, you would remove the query block, and put in the original Featured News Block.

Oh, I see. That's not super intuitive / going to be hard to remember as an occasional use item. Is it not possible to handle it in a single block?

spelkey-ucd commented 1 year ago

Sure it's possible, but I would say not advisable. It would be a lot of special handling for one little thing (none of the other cards have this feature).

Got it. We will just need to have good easy to find documentation on the intranet for those who need to know how to do this. Thanks Steve!
