Some network cables have the connector broken, so it's easy to lose the connection.
The quality of the cables should also be check, just to remove any clear degradation on data streaming. (with two laptops connected to the switch and a simple ping could give us an idea.)
Additionally, I would suggest adding labels to the plugs saying which machine is connecting. It's useful when there are many cables lying around.
