we have been re-writing everything to start with an internet download in data_prep.r. That will output to the source_data directory of files. Both are .gitignored so speed things up.
I wonder, in the end, how many of the files will be on gDrive, and how many free-floating on the internet?
Certainly getting off of gDrive is a good goal. Making an uber-package of campus spatial data that's not generally available at a stable URL might be an even better goal. See the data dictionary for more on the data.
Google Drive isn't a great home for the source data (b/c depends on agreement with Google, no version control, no persistent identifiers, etc). It would be better to put this data in Zenodo. I'm happy to take a look at Zenodo packages for R.
