Working through Building Electro-Optical Systems: Making It All Work (see drive)
- Étendue: "To transmit the most light from such sources, the system needs both a large area and a large angular acceptance. The figure of merit for this attribute is called the étendue"
  - need to understand better but may not be incredibly important
- section 7.11: Modulators
- "The most serious limitation is their very small étendue. Even for light going right down the axis, the beam has to be so small in diameter that diffraction limits the length of the cell" (234)
  - in line with AdvR mentioning that it would be difficult to couple into the waveguide without fiber in

Just wanted to drop this in here, interesting read for gen modulation info!! Considering intensity modulators place MORE restrictions on power handling we on the intensity modulation hate train :-P

Options:

KTP 785 nm, 250mW fiber restriction (proposal)
LiNbO3 EDFA band (1100-1550?), 1-10W possible
- requires space for EDFA and expensive tracking camera on ground station
- ALTERNATE: multiplex a powerful laser capable of being detected by a silicon tracking camera (ZWO ASI 183MM Pro), limited by space and power
Multiple SOA for different polarizations
- possible alternate: encode polarization by switching which is amplified
